Visual Research
September 11 – October 16, 2025 •. Research
Throughout this process, I consulted a variety of visual materials in order to be reflect what I'm planning on doing for my project, which included design books and annuals, family photos and videos that I felt would work best for the project, and exploring different materials and working with paper.
Grid Systems in Graphic Design by Josef Müller-Brockmann
The first form of research I have felt sufficient for during the early stage of my project was Müller-Brockmann's book on grid system. I referred to the following pages shown the most, especially when it came to my first layout.
The book does a great job uncovering the benefits of using a grid in graphic design to organize your material, and can be served as a communication tool.

Experiential Formats & Packaging by Roger Fawcett Tang and Daniel Mason
This book was a great reference for me, as it only expanded on what I can do in terms of layering and expanding the traditional layout. Furthermore, it also was a great asset along with Müller Brockmann's Grid System in Graphic Design book because it helped me think about finding a balance of how I can use a grid effectively, and how I think beyond the traditional book layout.

AIGA 365
The AIGA 365 design annual had a few pieces on there that assisted me with working with type & image, and assisted me with building a starting ground with my work.

Typorama by Philppe Apeloig
Although the some of the work within this book didn't assist me with exploring new ways of setting type for the sake of this project, there was a few pieces of work that greatly assisted me at this early stage of the project. However, I feel that throughout the course of the project, I will explore this book even further with a fresh set of eyes to see what else I can do with setting type.

Family Photos
For the sake of this project, one of things I want to do is choose a set of family photos that will work alongside with the writing and the stories I will be sharing. To the right are photos that I felt will benefit my project greatly.
